A cliff-top home in Voelklip, the fibre router in the study and the Explora in the lounge: that's the classic setup where people ask us about the DStv WiFi Connector. The catch is that it only suits some decoders. Here's which boxes it works with, which ones don't need it, and what to do if yours isn't on the list.
Quick answer: The connector is made for the DStv Explora, meaning the models that came before the Explora Ultra. The Ultra has WiFi built in, so it doesn't need a DStv WiFi Connector. Single-view HD decoders aren't covered in DStv's internet guides, and Streama and OpenView boxes get online in their own way.
As the team behind DStv installation in Hermanus, we hear this one often, usually from someone who bought a connector at the shop and found it doesn't suit their box. So start here. Find your decoder in the table, then read its section below.
| Decoder | Does the connector work? | Best way to get it online |
|---|---|---|
| DStv Explora (earlier models) | Yes, this is the box it was designed for | The connector, or a network cable to the router |
| DStv Explora Ultra | Not needed | Built-in WiFi, or a network cable |
| Single-view HD decoder | Not listed in DStv's internet guides | Check with DStv first, or look at an upgrade |
| DStv Streama | No | It joins your home WiFi by itself |
| OpenView decoder | No, it isn't a DStv product | The current model has its own WiFi |
The earlier Explora models have no WiFi inside. DStv's own comparison lists their internet options as an external USB WiFi Connector or an Ethernet cable. The connector fills that gap.
It's a small unit that sits next to the decoder and draws its power from one of the Explora's two USB ports. It picks up your home WiFi and passes it to the decoder. That lets the Explora reach full Catch Up and remote recording without a cable trailing to the router.
In the box you get the connector, a docking station and a basic user guide. DStv gives it a 12-month warranty from the date you buy it. If you're unsure whether your Explora was fitted properly in the first place, our Explora and Explora Ultra installation team can check the whole chain, from dish to router.
If your decoder is an Explora Ultra, keep your money in your pocket. The Ultra has WiFi built in, so it joins your network straight from its settings. It also has an Ethernet port if you'd rather use a cable.
The Ultra has one USB port, against two on the older Explora, and it doesn't need it for internet at all. Once online, it also runs apps such as Netflix and Prime Video, which need their own subscriptions.
Good to know: Without internet, the Explora Ultra still works as a normal satellite decoder. DStv says that offline, it behaves the same as the other Explora models.
Plenty of Hermanus holiday homes and granny flats still run a single-view HD decoder. That's fine for live TV. But DStv's internet guides are written for the Explora family and don't list the connector for single-view boxes, so check with DStv before you buy one for it.
If you want Catch Up online and remote recording, the realistic route is an Explora. Our guide on upgrading from HD to Explora Ultra walks through the steps, and choosing the right DStv decoder compares the boxes side by side.
DStv's promotions earlier in 2026 listed the Explora at R1,499 and the Explora Ultra at R2,999. Prices have moved since, and a PVR also carries the Access Fee, R125 a month at the time of writing. Ask our team for a current quote before you decide.
Not sure what's under the TV? You don't need to unplug anything to find out. Look for these clues:

Matching the right decoder is half the job. The other half is the WiFi it has to pick up. Sea-facing houses in Westcliff and Eastcliff often have big glass fronts, thick walls and a router tucked at the back near the fibre point.
The connector can only pass on the signal it receives. If your phone battles to stream in the TV room, the Explora will battle too. That's where our WiFi and network installation work comes in, with a mesh point or a cable that brings strong WiFi to the TV cabinet.
Holiday homes add their own twist. If you switch internet providers between visits, the connector still remembers the old network name and password, so it has to be set up again. Our notes on DStv for holiday homes cover what else to check before the season.
Technician tip: Put the connector beside the decoder, never on top of it. DStv's own guide says the same. In open cabinets in Onrus and Sandbaai we also keep it clear of metal TV stands, which can weaken the WiFi it hears.
The setup itself is covered step by step on DStv's page about connecting an Explora to the internet. If the router sits next to the TV, skip the connector and use a network cable, which DStv calls the most stable option.

DStv sells and supports it as a way to get an Explora online, and its setup wizard and guides are built around that job. For a smart TV, laptop or CCTV recorder, we'd rather fit a proper access point or a cable. It works better and is far easier to support later.
No. The Explora Ultra has WiFi built in and an Ethernet port for a cable, so a connector adds nothing. If you bought one by mistake, check the store's return policy and keep the slip and box in good condition.
There's no monthly fee for the connector itself. You buy it once at a DStv Service Centre, a DStv Agency or a major retailer, so compare prices on the day. Your data comes from your own internet provider, and the Explora's Access Fee applies with or without it.
Only if that decoder is an Explora. Many holiday homes in Hermanus still run a single-view HD decoder, which isn't listed in DStv's internet guides. Send us a photo of the back of the box and we'll tell you what you have and whether an upgrade makes sense.
It picks up your home WiFi and passes it to the Explora, so the decoder can go online without a long network cable to the router. That gives you full Catch Up for your package and lets you set remote recordings from the DStv app.
