Most delays we see have nothing to do with DStv being slow. A DStv reconnection usually stalls because of one small slip: a short payment, a decoder switched off too soon, or a salty connector nobody thought to check. Here are the mistakes that keep Hermanus TVs dark for longer than they need to be, and how to avoid each one.
Quick answer: The biggest DStv reconnection delays come from paying less than the full balance, using the wrong account reference, switching the decoder off before it receives the signal, and ignoring hardware faults. Pay everything owed, leave the decoder on a DStv channel, re-authorise it in the app and check the signal screen.
This is the one we hear about most. Someone pays the month's subscription and waits, but the account still shows money owing.
DStv's help pages say services reconnect automatically when the payment shows, provided the full amount has been paid, including any reconnection fee. Pay a rand short and the switch-on simply doesn't happen. Unsure whether to phone DStv or us about it? Read MultiChoice or a local installer first.
DStv doesn't list a fixed figure on its help pages. It says the fee covers the admin of processing late payments. The exact amount sits on your account, so check the MyDStv app or dstv.com and pay that full balance, not a round number you remember.
Paying at a till or by EFT? The payment has to land on the right account. A typo in the account number, or paying onto an old account from a previous house, sends the money somewhere it can't help.
Keep your DStv account details handy and double-check them before you pay. If you moved here recently, our guide to moving DStv to Hermanus covers updating your details.
Lots of people pay, check the TV once, see nothing and switch everything off at the wall. Then they wonder why it's still dead the next morning.
The decoder needs to be on, connected to the dish and sitting on a DStv channel to receive the switch-on. Leave it running. If nothing changes, re-authorise through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or "Fix errors" on dstv.com.
Technician tip: Don't do a factory reset in a panic. It wipes your settings and rarely helps with an account problem. If you really need one, read our notes on resetting a DStv decoder first.
Here on the Overstrand coast, hardware is often the real problem. Salt air eats into brackets and connectors, and the south-easter and winter north-westers can shift a dish just enough to lose the picture.
Cliff-top homes in Voelklip, Eastcliff and Westcliff take the worst of it. We see the same in Onrus and Sandbaai, where sea spray reaches the roof most days. Our article on salt air and coastal installs explains why.
If your account is paid and the signal screen reads zero, no amount of paying again will help. You need DStv signal repairs instead.

The message on screen tells you who to call. Write it down before you phone anyone. Here's a quick guide:
| Error | Likely cause | Who to contact |
|---|---|---|
| E16 | Service not active on the decoder | DStv, through the app or WhatsApp |
| E48-32 | No signal getting to the decoder | A technician |
| E30-2 | Brief signal loss, often in stormy weather | Wait it out, then a technician if it lasts |
| E51 or E141-4 | Smartcard not being read or verified | Check the card, then DStv |
The E48-32 error explained is the one most often mistaken for an account issue.
Hermanus has plenty of homes that stand empty for months, and guesthouses that need TVs working the moment whale season starts. Arriving on a Friday to a dead screen and fully booked rooms is stressful.
Our page on DStv for holiday homes has more ideas for keeping an empty house ready.
Safety first: Never climb onto the roof to check the dish yourself, particularly on a windy cliff-top. Leave ladders, brackets and LNB wiring to a technician.
Tick all of those and most reconnections sort themselves out. If not, the problem is on the roof or in the cable, and satellite dish alignment or a cable repair is the next step.
If you've ticked every box and the TV is still blank, our relocations and reconnections team can test the setup from Hawston to Stanford. We quote first, and we test the signal with you before we leave. At the time of writing, replacing a full single-view setup budgets from around R850 to R1,400, so ask our team for a current quote.

Usually the full balance, including any reconnection fee, hasn't been paid, or the payment hasn't reflected yet. Check the account in the MyDStv app, leave the decoder on a DStv channel and re-authorise it. If the signal screen shows no signal, the dish or cable needs checking.
DStv says services reconnect automatically once the payment shows on your account, as long as the full amount has been paid. How long that takes depends on how and where you paid. Keep the decoder switched on while you wait.
Often, yes. Once the payment reflects, you can re-authorise the decoder yourself through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or the Fix errors option on dstv.com. You only need to phone if those don't work.
Salt doesn't affect the account, but it can stop the picture coming back. In Hermanus, corroded connectors and rusted brackets are common on sea-facing homes. If your account is paid and the signal reads zero, a technician should check the dish and cable.
DStv says the fee covers the admin of processing late payments, so it's linked to accounts that fall behind. Your account shows whether a fee applies and how much it is. Paying on time is the simplest way to avoid it.
