The DStv installation wizard is the set of setup screens your decoder shows the first time it is switched on. It tells the decoder which satellite to listen to, what kind of LNB is on your dish and then searches for channels. In Hermanus we often get calls from people staring at these screens after a power cut or a reset, so here is what each step really does.
Quick answer: The DStv installation wizard links your decoder to the dish. It sets the language, picks the satellite, matches the LNB type, checks signal on every tuner and then scans for channels. If it stalls on the signal step, the problem is almost always the dish, cable or connectors, not the decoder itself.
Think of the wizard as a short interview. Your answers tell the decoder how the dish outside is wired. Here are the jobs it does:
It does not activate your subscription and it cannot fix a dish that has moved. That is why a quick satellite dish alignment is so often the real cure.
You will see it on a brand-new decoder, after a factory reset and sometimes after a decoder swap. On an Explora it is part of the first set-up, and DStv's own guide says to wait for all three tuners to show signal before pressing OK.
Many Hermanus homes are holiday houses that stand empty for months. Owners arrive for the whale season, someone presses reset, and the wizard is back. If that sounds familiar, our notes on resetting your DStv decoder explain when a reset helps and when it only adds steps.
Wording changes a little between decoder models. This is the order most people see on a standard home setup.
You want steady readings on every tuner, not flickering bars. Signal strength shows how much is arriving, but signal quality shows how clean it is, and quality matters more. You can also check your signal strength later from the Help menu under General Information and Tuner Status.
| Wizard screen | What it needs from you | Common slip we see on the Overstrand coast |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite | The South African satellite | A second-hand decoder from up north still set to another region |
| Setup type | Quick for most homes | Manual chosen by accident, then the wrong LNB picked |
| LNB type | Single LNB for HD, Smart LNB for Explora | An Explora plugged into an old single LNB on a Vermont rental |
| Signal | Steady quality on every tuner | Rusty connector at the dish after years of salt air |
| Scan | Patience | Pressing back halfway, so the list is only half built |

When the DStv installation wizard says poor signal, it is telling you the decoder can't hear the satellite clearly. The wizard is only the messenger. Something between the sky and the back of the box is letting the signal down.
On the cliffs of Westcliff, Eastcliff and Voelklip, the south-easter can nudge a dish just enough to lose it. Read why the Walker Bay wind does this, because a dish that moved one centimetre at the rim can miss the satellite completely.
Other usual suspects in town:
Safety first: Please don't climb onto the roof or a ladder to turn the dish yourself, and never open the decoder or fiddle with LNB wiring. Wind on the Hermanus cliffs makes roof work risky, and a dish needs a proper signal meter to line up anyway.
If the scan finds nothing or freezes partway, try these safe steps first. They take about ten minutes.
If the box then shows an error instead of the wizard, our guide to the E48-32 error covers the most common one.
In security estates around Fernkloof and in Kleinmond complexes, your decoder may run off a shared dish. Shared systems often need different settings, so quick setup can fail even when the dish is fine.
Guesthouse owners in Stanford and Fisherhaven with several rooms face the same issue. A shared setup is best checked by someone who knows the system, and our communal DStv systems work covers exactly that.
Technician tip: Before you reset anything, take a photo of the signal screen with your phone. It tells a technician more than a long description.
Run the wizard twice, check the cables, and if you still see poor signal, stop there. Running it again won't move the dish or clean a corroded connector.
That is the point where a technician with a meter saves you time. We check the dish, LNB, cable and connectors, then run the wizard with you and confirm signal on every tuner. If this does not fix it, call a technician rather than buying a new decoder, because the box is rarely the culprit.
For a fresh setup, our new DStv installation service covers the dish, LNB, cabling, alignment and the full wizard. We quote first, then test the signal with you before we leave. You can also read more about DStv installation in Hermanus and the areas we cover.

You clear it by finishing it with good signal. Once the decoder sees steady signal on every tuner and completes the channel scan, the wizard closes and live TV starts. If it keeps returning, the decoder is not getting usable signal from the dish.
Usually the decoder is not receiving a clean signal, or the wrong satellite or LNB type was picked. Restart the decoder at the wall, check the cable at the back and confirm your choices. If it still won't scan, the dish or connectors need checking.
It means the decoder cannot hear the satellite clearly enough to carry on. Common causes are a dish knocked out of line, a corroded connector, a blocked view of the sky or heavy rain. The decoder itself is rarely at fault.
Not in a useful way. The decoder needs the wizard to know how your dish is set up and to build the channel list. Skipping it leaves you with no channels, so it is better to fix the signal and let it finish.
A local DStv technician can check the dish, LNB and cabling, then run the wizard with you. We work across Hermanus, Onrus, Sandbaai and the Overstrand coast, and we always quote before we drive out.
